Acrylic is the backbone of modern signage in Indonesia: weather-resistant, lightweight, can be shaped precisely with CNC Laser. But raw acrylic alone is not enough. The finishing you choose determines whether your signage looks like a corner shop or a flagship brand.
5 main finishing options
1. Clear glossy (standard)
The most basic finish: transparent acrylic with natural glossy surface. Suitable for signage that highlights graphics behind it (logo print, solid color). Lowest cost, fastest lead-time. Weakness: fingerprints show, scratches easily without care.
2. Frosted / matte
Surface sanded or matte film applied so surface becomes matte and diffuse. Brand perception: premium, modern, less reflective. Good for: luxury retail signage, high-end clinics, corporate offices. Cost 15-25% higher than clear glossy.
3. Backlit (edge-lit or back-lit)
Acrylic combined with LED strip or LED panel behind. Edge-lit: LED at the acrylic edge, light travels through material (thin, sleek signage). Back-lit: LED behind frosted acrylic, light penetrates (thick, dramatic signage). Cost 40-80% higher than non-backlit due to wiring and power supply.
4. Mirror acrylic
Acrylic with reflective mirror-like layer. Good for statement signage in fashion retail, Instagrammable cafes, event activations. Common colors: silver, gold (rose gold trending in 2026). Weakness: in crowded rooms, reflection can be distracting.
5. Painted / laminated
Raw acrylic painted or laminated with colored vinyl. Allows specific colors outside standard acrylic range (Pantone matching for corporate color). Cost depends on color count and detail. Good for brands with specific brand colors (e.g. BCA-specific blue, Pertamina-specific red).
Matrix: when to pick which
Luxury retail / flagship brand
Frosted + backlit. This combination is the industry standard for fashion flagship signage (designer boutiques, jewelry stores). Diffuse light gives a "soft luxury" feel.
Instagrammable cafe & F&B
Mirror acrylic or neon-effect backlit. Goal: photoable. Customers enter the cafe, photograph the signage, post on Instagram. Signage becomes free marketing.
Clinic & healthcare
Frosted or clear with printed detail. Perception: clean, professional, not flashy. Avoid mirror and heavy backlit that can feel "commercial".
Corporate office reception
Painted with Pantone matching + subtle backlit. Corporate color must be exact. Light backlit for visibility without glare for meetings behind it.
Exhibition booth
Depends on venue and booth concept. Premium booth: heavy backlit to stand out among competitors. Budget booth: clear glossy with detailed graphics behind.
Technical details often overlooked
- Acrylic thickness. 3mm for indoor small signage, 5-8mm for medium, 10-20mm for large or outdoor signage. Too thin = wobble, too thick = over-cost
- Edge finishing. After CNC laser cut, edge can be polished (seamless, premium) or sanded (matte, hides fingerprints). Small detail separating amateur vs pro signage
- Mounting method. Stand-off (distance from wall, creates shadow), flush mount (tight to wall, clean), or floating (dramatic). Mounting affects perceived quality as much as finishing
- LED color temperature for backlit. 3000K (warm) for warm retail, 4000K (neutral) for corporate, 6500K (cool) for tech/modern. Wrong color temp = brand feels off
Cost overview 2026 (per square meter, all-in production + installation Jakarta)
- Clear glossy with simple cutout: IDR 450,000 – 750,000
- Frosted / matte: IDR 600,000 – 950,000
- Mirror acrylic: IDR 800,000 – 1,400,000
- Painted with Pantone matching: IDR 700,000 – 1,200,000
- Backlit (edge-lit or back-lit): IDR 1,200,000 – 2,500,000
Wide cost range because spec details (logo complexity, mounting, LED spec) matter significantly. Numbers above are initial benchmarks for planning.
Conclusion
Acrylic finishing is not "buy material, make signage". It is the decision separating brands that feel premium from those that feel amateur. Briefing contractors should not just be "make acrylic signage", but "acrylic signage with finishing X because mood Y". Contractors who can discuss finishing in detail are almost certainly first-hand producers, not agents.
